If you are a Dilute Labrador Breeder, you will find the following information very informative and helpful, in determining what colors you can produce, by crossing certain dogs that carry specific color genetics. We have developed this page, for you to use as a tool, to help you with understanding color genetics. We have done the work for you, and this page and information is offered to you free, for your use. Feel free to use it for your own personal use and print it out as you need it. Genetic Code Explaination:
B = black
b = chocolate
E = ability to express pigment or coat color
e = ability to express dark pigment
D = dilute gene not turned on
d = ability to express dilution
dd = dilute

BB = black Lab, no chocolate gene
Bb = black Lab, carries chocolate gene
bb = chocolate Lab, no black gene
Yellow is produced by the presence of a recessive epistatic gene which masks the black or chocolate genes.
EE = no yellow gene
Ee = yellow carrier but apears either black or chocolate
ee = yellow
Dilute gene:
DD = does not carry the gene for dilution
Dd = carries the dilute gene, is dilute factored
dd = carries double dilution gene, is dilute
Interpreting the genetic codes:
BLACK and CHARCOAL
EEBBDD = Dominant Black Dominant, (carries no other colors, can produce only Black)
EEBBDd = Dominant Black, carries Dilute, still dominant for Black/Charcoal
EEBBdd = Basic Charcoal, dominant for Black/Charcoal
EEBbDD = Black that carries Chocolate
EEBbDd = Black that carries Chocolate and Dilute
EEBbdd = Charcoal that carries Chocolate
EeBBDD = Black that carries Yellow
EeBBDd = Black that carries Yellow and Dilute
EeBBdd = Charcoal that carries Yellow
EeBbDD = Black that carries Yellow and Chocolate
EeBbDd = Black that carries Yellow, Chocolate and Dilute
EeBbdd = Charcoal that carries Yellow and Chocolate
YELLOW and CHAMPAGNE

Here are some tips to remember that will help and make it easier for you to understand. In the genetic color code for the Lab there are three different letters----the E, the B and the D, each is an allele, the E allele, the B allele and the D allele. They can be written as either a capital letter or a lowercase letter, each representing a different color code combination for coat color. Here are some easy ways to remember what some of the codes mean:
the B in the code is for brown (or chocolate), in the sense that if you see one lower case b in the code, this means that there is a brown gene involved. If it is one lowercase b in the code (Bb), the dog carries the brown (chocolate) gene but if there are two lowercase b's, (bb) then the dog is of the brown (chocolate) coat color. If there are only uppercase B's then there is no brown in the color code and the dog is not brown and does not carry the brown gene. Another thing to remember is that if the code has a capital B and a capital E in it, then the dogs coat color is Black. The last thing is that if the color code contains one lowercase e (Ee), then the dog carries the yellow gene, if there are two lowercase e's (ee), in the code, then the dogs coat color is yellow.
